Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol was born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali, a village in Ludhiana district, Punjab. He grew up in Sahnewal and attended the Government Senior Secondary School in Lalton Kalan, Ludhiana, where his father served as the headmaster. Dharmendra completed his matriculation at Ramgarhia College in Phagwara in 1952.This makes it obvious that Deol was born and raised in a Punjabi Jatt family.
