Early Life
As a child, Shakti was born as Sunil Kapoor, in Delhi, and raised in a Punjabi Hindu family. His father used to run a clothes shop in the Connaught Place in Delhi. The reason why Kapoor changed his name to Shakti was because, upon being spotted and noticed by Sunil Dutt one day, the latter mentioned that the former would be unable to find success with his actual name, and thus he recommended the name change from Sunil to Shakti.

Early Career Struggles and Villain Roles
Having studied at FTII, Shakti realized very quickly the hard work that was needed to make a name in Bollywood. He had his struggling phase, and initially, he acted in several inconsequential roles but was still looking out for a role wherein he would be considered the leading man or the protagonist of the movie.
However, things did not look the way he wanted, and in his debut role came in the movie ‘Khel Khiladi Ka’ wherein he played opposite Dharmendra and Hema Malini back in 1977.
The next two years had Shakti managed to have an actor in Bollywood no doubt, but as a villain because two of his movies, ‘Qurbani’ and ‘Rocky’, featured him as a villain.
If that’s not enough, he had villain roles in movies like ‘Himmatwala’, ‘Hero’ as well – and by the 1990s, he decided to diversify his roles from villain to positive comic ones. His performance was well-received in movies like Baap Numbri, Beta Dus Numbri, Andaz Apna Apna, Chalbaaz, and many more.

The 90s saw Shakti as a villain and transitioning towards a positive comic role, but since 2000, Shakti has made a point to appear mostly in comic roles. He became a regular in Priyadarshan’s movies like ‘Hungama’, ‘Hulchul’, ‘Chup Chup Ke’, ‘Malamal Weekly’, and ‘Bhagam Bhag’, and interestingly, he appeared in comic roles in every one of these movies. Shakti Kapoor Sting Operation
Back in 2005, Shakti became the epicentre of a controversy, which turned out to be a sting operation against him. In a leaked video, it appeared that Kapoor was asking sexual favours from a young girl, who was an undercover agent in disguise. It was a classic ‘casting couch’ case, and he had mentioned that he wanted to ‘make love’ to her, and it would be in exchange for her entering the movie industry. However, this turned out to be a sting operation to expose the horrors of the casting couch, which was quite popular in Bollywood back then.
This caused a controversy, and Kapoor was banned by the Movie and Television Producers Guild of India, but there was no proof of the allegations that were put against him. Kapoor went on to say that the clip was framed in a way, and that the undercover reporter had met him several times and even threatened to kill herself if he did not come up to the hotel room that she had booked for them.
